The Good Deeds Project

When An ETransfer Becomes Full Cupboards, A Coffee and Clean Laundry

 ·  Community Story

Today we turned one community etransfer into full cupboards for a mom with no food, a morning coffee for a man going through cancer alone and a laundromat trip with groceries for a neighbour with a disability who had not been able to do laundry in two months. Carrying clean clothes and bags of food into their home and hearing a heartfelt thank you that stayed with us showed how meeting practical needs with presence and care creates a special kind of magic that helps us all.

Today I woke up realizing someone had sent me an e-transfer to do a good deed for my good deeds project. At almost the same time, a mom reached out to me and said she is having a challenging time and there’s no food in the cupboards. I was able to buy groceries and bring current food donations. The cupboards are now full. When I delivered the food, I saw a little bike outside the door. It belonged to their child. It reminded me why this matters.

A man reached out to me for help saying he is going through cancer alone and it would bring him joy if he could have enough money for a morning coffee when he’s out because he takes the bus. He now has the cup of coffee in his hands knowing someone cares.

One person who reached out recently has a disability. They hadn’t been able to do laundry in two months. They don’t have a vehicle or many contacts to help. Because of their disability, carrying laundry to a laundromat on the bus is too challenging. They do it the odd time, but not often enough.

I picked them up and we brought a bunch of laundry so everything could be washed at once. I drove them to the laundromat, and paid for a portion of their laundry. While we waited, I bought them a tea and we listened to music, and hung out in the car while the laundry was going.

I carried everything into their apartment for them and gave them several bags of groceries because they were very low on food.

“When someone says thank you in a way that moves through your body and stays with you, it’s because something deeper than the obvious task was met.”

The way they said thank you stayed with me. I could feel that they truly meant it. There’s a special kind of magic in those moments that help us all.

And that’s what it’s all about.
